Quick Win

Suitable for beginners, this yoga pose can help you get stronger, calmer and more flexible.

Try This Today

  • Watch Denise Austin demonstrate the Beginner Warrior yoga pose in the video above. Hold the pose for 30 seconds on each side, breathing deeply through your nose.
  • Adapt the pose to suit your level of fitness. For example, beginners may find it difficult to place the back heel all the way down. Just go as far as you can without overstretching. If you have trouble balancing, practice next to a chair or wall.
  • To build your yoga routine, add the foundational poses Beginner Downward Dog and Cobra.

Why

Yoga can help improve cognitive function in older adults, according to a systematic review of six studies of people age 60 and older published in 2021 in Complementary Therapies in Medicine. In a more recent systematic review and meta-analysis of 15 studies of adults age 60 and older published in 2023 in the International Journal of Older People Nursing, yoga can significantly improve balance, strength, flexibility and symptoms of depression.
