A conversation based on a common interest is a natural way to start. Notice someone wearing your alma mater's or favorite band's or sports team's shirt? Ask them about it!

 

  • Additional conversation starters may include:
    • What do you think of a recent event that happened in our area?
    • Have you seen any good movies or TV shows lately?
    • Are you looking forward to the weekend? 
  • If you want to continue the discussion, when someone makes a comment or asks you a question, try not to mimic what they say. For example, if someone says “I loved this movie,” don’t just agree with them. Instead, follow-up with a similar movie they might enjoy, a discussion about an actor who was involved, or a question about the plot.
  • Remember to smile, make eye contact and see if you can maintain a conversation with them for at least five minutes.
Why

Many adults crave conversation and socialization but aren’t sure what to say. Try approaching a neighbor, a regular at your coffee shop or a coworker you haven’t spoken with recently and ask them simple questions about their day or talk about a shared interest.
